Nov 11’s NXNE Kick-off Showcase featured four great 08 festival alumni (like Toronto’s Spiral Beach, above). A packed Horseshoe Tavern was treated to some of the best Canadian talent around, brought together to help kick off NXNE 09’s festival submission period. Toronto’s Evelyn Room opened the night with a smooth set of warm, rootsy rock. The band was followed by the uninhibited stage antics and garage crunch of The Golden Hands Before God Conducts Incredible Magic Band & The Spirits. Highlights here included the tambourine player’s using hips, head, & Horseshoe roof as a foil for his instrument. Next, special guests Spiral Beach delivered a killer, high-energy set that jammed fans onto the dance floor. And The High Dials, from Montreal, closed the show: great songwriting, harmonies, and a wall of guitars.
All four bands are featured on the NXNE Top 60 Tip Sheet, a pipeline that brings the music of top Canadian NXNE performers directly to radio programmers across the country…another reason to get YOUR 09 festival submission underway. NXNE accepts submissions until January 31, but it’ll cost you $10 less if you get your submission in before the end of the year ($25 now v $35 later).
