After 90 years, Canada finally gets its chance to see one of the seminal masterworks of cinematic horror with the added bonus of Do Make Say Think, Owen Pallett (Final Fantasy) and Berlin electronica artist Robert Lippok providing the live soundtrack.
One of the earliest of German horror films, Tales of the Uncanny (Unheimliche Geschichten) was first released in 1919. Now, 90 years later, NXNE joins with Luminato and the Goethe-Institut Toronto to help this silent classic haunt its way to into Canada for the very first time.
Directed by Richard Oswald and starring Conrad Veidt in one of his earliest roles, the film (not to be confused with the same director’s 1932 remake) uses an antiquarian bookstore’s after-hours creepiness to frame five distinct stories, including pieces by Edgar Allan Poe and R.L Stevenson.
The film will be shown at Yonge-Dundas Square Thur June 11, 9:30pm . A must-see for cinephiles, audiophiles, horrorphiles..
