NXNE CONFERENCE CELEBRITY INTERVIEW
DANNY FIELDS
interviewed by
WARREN KINSELLA
The NXNE Conference brings together the music industry’s key players over two action-packed days
at the Hyatt Regency Toronto. Informative, provocative panel discussions and celebrity interviews—
all licensed, of course—offer an explosion of revolutionary thinking about music: the biz, the
technology, the future.
This special Celebrity Interview with the former manager of The Ramones, Danny Fields, follows the
previously announced Celebrity Interview with GZA, founding member of the seminal hip hop group
the Wu-Tang Clan, conducted by hip hop pioneer Fab 5 Freddy.
During their chat, Danny Fields and Warren Kinsella will delve into the changing world of artist
development. The Ramones, Iggy and the Stooges, and the MC5 all had time to develop and grow
through a live scene at a time when songs were tried and tested over and over in front of a live
audience before being committed to vinyl. No instant downloads; no MySpace or Twitter. Fans got
information through magazines like Creem and Crawdaddy, and waiting for the next issue was sweet
anticipation. Fields and Kinsella will discuss the new advantages and drawbacks in this age of
instantaneous media.
Danny Fields was born in New York City sometime during WWII, and eventually went to Harvard Law
School, from which he dropped out. He was deeply involved with Warhol’s Factory scene, and wrote
eyewitness accounts about the early days of the Velvet Underground. As a publicist at Elektra
Records, he went on to confound the industry with albums by the MC5, Iggy and the Stooges, Nico,
David Peel – and the Ramones, whom he managed for five years at the start of their career. He, along
with co-manager Linda Stein, took the Ramones to England in 1976, where they had a huge impact
on the burgeoning UK punk scene.
Warren Kinsella is the author of Fury’s Hour: A Sort-of Punk Manifesto. He was the lead singer and
bassist of Calgary’s Hot Nasties, and the founder of punk label Social Blemish Records (”More hits
than zits!”). Kinsella has interviewed dozens of punk bands over the years, and is currently a member
of Shit From Hell, a Toronto-based geriatric punk quartet. He thinks Iggy Pop is God.
