TORONTO, May 17, 2010 – North by Northeast (NXNE) announces the third round of film programming for 2010. NXNE Film brings the best in music-centric films from documentary to drama genres, and screens 40 films from June 16-20 during NXNE around the city of Toronto.
NXNE Film is thrilled to present the Canadian premiere of Search and Destroy: Iggy Pop and The Stooges’ Raw Power. This documentary spotlights the making of the 1973 seminal rock album, Raw Power. The film features new interviews with Iggy Pop, James Williamson, Scott Asheton, Mike Watt, Chrissie Hynde, Mick Rock, Johnny Marr, and Henry Rollins.
Director Bruce McDonald launches the Canadian premiere of This Movie is Broken. Filmed in Toronto at Harbourfront Centre, the story explores a somewhat miraculous romantic relationship, using an epic outdoor concert featuring Broken Social Scene as a lynchpin to the event that might just save the day…. and the romance. NXNE Film is also pleased to offer a rare theatre screening of the critically acclaimed
Canadian-directed Rock’n’roll vampire spoof, Suck. The film is a wild ride down a highway to hell, with a killer cast including Iggy Pop, Alice Cooper, Henry Rollins, and Dave Foley.
Additional Films confirmed to date include:
A Gun to the Head – D: Blaine Thurier (The New Pornographers) A reformed criminal escapes his wife’s dinner party for a quick beer with his cousin and former partner in crime. Over the course of one wild night, he is dragged back into a world of drugs, women, guns and gangsters, endangering the lives of those he loves the most.
Year of the Carnivore – D: Sook-Yin Lee Year of the Carnivore is a romantic-comedydrama about a girl with an unrequited crush on a boy who thinks she’s bad in bed, so she goes out to get more ‘experience’. Starring Cristin Milioti, Will Sasso, Sheila McCarty and Kevin McDonald.
X: The Unheard Music – D: W.T. Morgan One of the most important bands to ever emerge from Los Angeles, X changed the face of punk music with their raw, vibrant, original style. We see the band at its peak in this legendary film, hammering out a powerful story with a striking, visionary style accompanied by unforgettable music.
Do It Again – D: Robert Patton-Spruill It is a quest. Geoff Edgers, a newspaper reporter, decides to take a most improbable leap. He sets out to find the still-surviving members of the long dormant British rock band, the Kinks (“You Really Got Me,” “Lola” and “Come Dancing”), to convince them to reunite. Featuring Sting, Zooey Deschanel, REM’s Peter Buck, Paul Weller, Robyn Hitchcock and Clive Davis.
We’re the Weakerthans, We’re From Winnipeg – D: Caelum Vatnsdal A featurelength tour documentary featuring Canadian band, The Weakerthans. Ten thousand kilometers. Twenty-five cities. One bus. One highway. Four guys. One band from Winnipeg.
The Watchmen: All Uncovered – D: Reil Munro The Watchmen formed in 1988 and went on to have a successful career in North America over 15 years. In 2008, The Watchmen reformed for a triumphant return to the Horseshoe Tavern. This much-anticipated film documents the reunion.
