For 7 years, Newmindspace has partied, played and pillow fought in the streets of Toronto and New York, spawning a movement that has spread to cities around the world. The pair, University of Toronto alum Kevin Bracken and Lori Kufner, are equally inspired by dada and Dr. Seuss, taking backyard games like blowing bubbles and capture the flag and recreating them on a massive scale. Beyond the fun and games lies the group’s most central problem: without permits, the thousand-person events are technically illegal, spawning a host of issues with local authorities that have resulted in nightclub raids, surveillance by the NYPD, and tales of crime and intrigue. However, the duo’s simple message and social media savvy have allowed the so-called Urban Playground Movement to spread across the globe to over 150 cities that celebrate International Pillow Fight Day every year. Follow them on their adventures!
