Music: Villagers

The intimacy of Villagers may seem a bit of a departure for Domino Records (a label best known for the likes of Franz Ferdinand and Arctic Monkeys) but similarities to other acts on the roster are present – especially with the new album {Awayland}.

Fronted by Conor O’Brien, the folky Irish five-piece has already picked up a Mercury Prize shortlisting for their 2010 debut, Becoming a Jackal. Meanwhile, opening slots for Neil Young, Elbow, Tracy Chapman, and Grizzly Bear have helped break the band live.

Critics’ descriptors of the album and O’Brien’s songwriting range from “casually disheveled” to mysterious and charming. His well-placed vocal quiver likely accounts for a lot of the latter, an aching vulnerability in otherwise ambitious arrangements. There is a hesitation to O’Brien, but also the sense he makes music because he wants to learn more about it.

You can learn more about Villagers in the NXNE Magazine, coming soon. Make plans to see Conor O'Brien and company via the schedulizer. Their NXNE appearance is also the only Canadian stop on this tour in support of the excellent sophomore album {Awayland}.
