The good folks at the Polaris Prize should have you running to your record player – they’ve announced their 2013 short list.
Godspeed You! Black Emperor – ‘Allelujah! Don’t Bend! Ascend!
Zaki Ibrahim – Every Opposite
Metric – Synthetica
METZ – METZ
Purity Ring – Shrines
Colin Stetson – New History Warfare Vol. 3: To See More Light
Tegan And Sara – Heartthrob
A Tribe Called Red – Nation II Nation
Whitehorse – The Fate Of The World Depends On This Kiss
Young Galaxy – Ultramarine
Of course, we’re thinking an NXNE alum will take it, so we’re putting our money on METZ, Purity Ring, A Tribe Called Red, Young Galaxy, and Metric (who sorta count – they semi-played the festival in 2012.) You can trust us in our picks, we’re not entirely biased or anything.
We also have to congratulate all the NXNE alum on the long list, including (deep breath)… Hayden, Kid Koala, Majical Cloudz, The Luyas, The Besnard Lakes, Hannah Georgas, Kobo Town, Danny Michel, Old Man Luedecke, Mac DeMarco, Evening Hymns, Corb Lund, Lindi Ortega, Rah Rah, Daniel Romano, and Suuns. For what it’s worth (by which we mean it’s worth cheesy sentiment,) you guys all made our short list.
But regardless of whether or not an esteemed festival alum ultimately nabs the $30,000 prize, we’ll still be entertained by the talented hosts who have played NXNE as well. Kathleen Edwards and Shad MC the gala – taking place in Toronto on September 23rd. You have until then to get listening, make your decision, and hope those jurors agree with you.
Also great? This year you don’t even need to suck up to your friend-in-the-music-industry-who-can-get-you-in-as-their-plus-one-to-the-gala… Click here for information on getting tickets.
