PASSION PIT

Go back to the beginning of Passion Pit, because we have never left that time. Rewind. Musicians are tuning up in the orchestra pit at the Met. This is too close to now, but this sound is important. Rewind further back. A group of kindergarteners run and shout on a playground. We have gone too far in the past, but this sound is also important. These are sounds that will percolate through Michael Angelakos’ pop project. Now it is 2007, Boston.

This is it. The right then. Michael sits with a laptop in his apartment. He is in college and 19, filled with excitement and frustration, happiness and dread. Like we all are then and now. He is making pop songs. Pop with two capital Ps and a big O. Pop songs for his friends to dance and party to. He pours these feelings into these songs. This is Passion Pit. From the very beginning, this is the purpose of Passion Pit, to make his friends feel good. Through the process, he inadvertently discovered something else. These feel-good songs were a strong and easy vessel for stashing his insecurities and emotions. And this is the duality of Passion Pit.

TYLER, THE CREATOR

Tyler, the Creator caught the world's attention in a big way in 2010. As the founder of Odd Future, his early notoriety came from his raw, DIY approach to the music business along with his wildly energetic and now infamous live shows, though he has since emerged as one of the most compelling creatives of his generation.

From his musical growth as a producer, composer and songwriter that garnered him MTV's Best New Artist award along with 3 top 5 Billboard-charting albums, to his film and TV work in short films, music video direction, and his Adult Swim sketch comedy show Loiter Squad that is aired for 3 seasons, to his design work for his apparel/lifestyle brand Golf Wang and his customized automotive company Flog Gnaw Motors, Tyler is as business savvy as he is imaginative.

He is the head of creative firm Camp Flog Gnaw after which his single-day music festival that has taken place in LA for the past 4 years takes its name. In addition, Tyler has recently launched his own media company, conveniently called Golf Media, which he describes as "Tyler and his brain without restrictions and bullshit".

POST MALONE

Post Malone stirs a mix of genres into his own sonic “sauce” that’s both intoxicating and invigorating.

“I describe what I do as sauce,” he affirms. “You can turn up to it. You can chill to it. You can do anything to it. It makes you feel some type of way, or it makes you want to party. It just comes naturally.”

Post’s recipe has yielded massive success so far. His breakthrough single “White Iverson” reached RIAA triple-platinum status, captured #1 at Rhythm Radio, and soared to the Top 10 of Urban Radio. To date, he’s cumulatively amassed 200 million streams and counting, garnering 22 million for his 2016 debut mixtape August 26. Meanwhile, his video views surpass 280 million-plus on YouTube/VEVO. These accolades speak to his work ethic, bringing him from humble beginnings in Texas to worldwide superstardom.

SLEIGH BELLS

Sleigh Bells wasted no time after getting off the ground in 2009, releasing three blistering records in four years. Ready for a break from the road, they took their time on their fourth LP, Jessica Rabbit, writing and finishing the record several times only to realize that they wanted to push themselves and the music further. As the three years elapsed, Derek went looking for the abyss, found it, and crawled out in one piece. Alexis, for her part, found something like heaven in nature and healthy living. The result of their combined experiences is an intense and vulnerable record that's highly evolved and completely uncategorizable, a major statement from a band wholly committed to advancing their dynamic, uncompromising vision. Jessica Rabbit is the first release on the band's own record label, Torn Clean.

TALIB KWELI

After nearly 20 years of releasing mesmerizing music, Talib Kweli stands as one of the world’s most talented and most accomplished Hip Hop artists. Whether working with Mos Def as one-half of Black Star, partnering with producer Hi-Tek for Reflection Eternal, releasing landmark solo material or collaborating with Kanye West, Pharrell Williams, Just Blaze, J Dilla, or Madlib, Kweli commands attention by delivering top-tier lyricism, crafting captivating stories and showing the ability to rhyme over virtually any type of instrumental.

TWIN PEAKS

TWIN PEAKS

Give Twin Peaks an inch and they'll take a stretch of the road. Having careened across America and beyond, sharing their staggering energy, the band made their third album the best way they know how: by themselves. The same group that produced the scuzzy squalor of their debut 'Sunken' and had legions of fans screaming along to their anthemic sophomore effort, 'Wild Onion,' now swings and serenades with 'Down In Heaven' (out on Grand Jury on May 13, 2016).

Co-produced by the band and longtime collaborator R. Andrew Humphrey, and mixed by new confidant John Agnello (Dinosaur Jr., Kurt Vile, Sonic Youth), the record is by turns raw, polished and wise beyond its years. The diverse new songs beg the listener to sway slowly, bang their head wildly and question what they were doing wasting emotional time on anything less. It is a marked, and some may say mature, development for a band that doesn't know how to play it safe. They aren't here to tell you what youth is like or what being a little older now means, though; they want to join you in a conversation about why we hurt, love and tug at each other.

COLD SPECKS

Born in Toronto, Canadian singer Cold Specks has been a byword for rare talent and depth of feeling since her arrival in late 2011. In the afterglow of first single 'Holland,' she performed on Jools Holland.

Her 2012 debut album, ‘I Predict a Graceful Expulsion!’, hailed as a masterful and wholly original debut was shortlisted for a Juno award and Polaris Prize. Cold Specks returned with her sophomore album ‘Neuroplasticity’, two years and a world map of tours later. Voted one of The Wall Street Journal and Los Angeles Times’ albums of the year, the follow-up was radically expanded.

MUNA

The best bands are the ones that operate like gangs, the ones who formed to kick back at the world and act as a kind of orphanage for similarly displaced youths. Said bands don't care about anything as much as they care about being that band. Music becomes the unifier, a language that can be joyful and sorrowful at once, and always cathartic. The pure authenticity of the band is in their refusal to pander to rules and expectations.

SON LITTLE

Playing his songs across the United States and in Europe over the past year, with a wide range of artists and to varying audiences, Son Little has noticed something particular about his own music. “As I’ve been going around to different places with this very eclectic mix of other acts, one thing that’s struck me about my music is just how American it is,” he says.

Where are the Port Lands?
Just east of downtown Toronto, as close to Lake Ontario as you can get without falling in. Just past the Distillery District and south. Where those giant white abandoned industrial silos by the Cherry Street Bridge are, you can cross the bridge to enter to NXNE Port Lands.

It's just south of the part of the Gardiner Expressway that should have been torn down and where it curves to become the Don Valley Parkway. It's where the biggest bike paths in Toronto meet: one north-south, one east-west. It's on the way to Cherry Beach, across the street from Toronto's glamest, biggest new venue, Rebel; the former Sound Academy but way shiner. It's also across from T&T Market and just north of a working drawbridge. It's where Cirque de Soleil pitches their tent in the summer and some gasp and are charmed by wonderment.

There's regular bus service, plenty of parking and it is one of the most bike friendly sites in town with free bike valet parking during the festival.

By TTC bus, from the west, take the 172B Cherry St bus from King or St. Andrews to Commissioners St. Coming from the east, take the 72C bus from Pape Station to Cherry and Commissioners St. There is tons pf parking for cars. Last year, we had a free boat shuttle from Harbourfront to NXNE Port Lands.
Artist FAQs
Should I email (insert name & email of person on the NXNE contact list) to ask them to book my band?
NXNE takes a very limited number of unsolicited bands, if you think yours should be one of those, send your particulars to info@nxne.com.
Yonge-Dundas Square
What is a Yonge-Dundas Square?
It's a big public space at Yonge and Dundas in the heart of the city, in the middle of downtown Toronto (Dundas Subway). It's also called YDS, some claim it's Toronto's Times Square and we regularly create special NXNE events including mega concerts by Iggy and the Stooges, the Flaming Lips, Run the Jewels and many more. We added a live video gaming in 2016 on the big screen and on dozens of consoles and computers. We are presenting the biggest free, outdoor live E-Sports event ever in Canada in 2017 to kick off NXNE the weekend of June 16 -18.

I hear the shows at YDS are free. That's cool, but what's the catch - how much are they?
They're free. Really.

Are they all ages?
Yes. Fun for the whole family. Also free.
