getting around
PUBLIC TRANSIT
Explore Toronto on one of North America’s finest transportation systems—the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC). With easy-to-navigate subways, buses, and streetcars, getting around the city is a snap. The TTC has many ways to pay for travel including:
One way fare is $3.35
The TTC also offers PRESTO (pay-as-you-go) tickets which include:
One-ride ticket: $3.35
Two-ride ticket: $6.570
Day-pass ticket: $13.50 (the most bang-for-your-buck)
TTC-tip: When you pay your fare using a PRESTO card or PRESTO Ticket, you get a two-hour transfer that allows you to enter and exit the TTC as much as you’d like within a two-hour period.
Important note: These PRESTO tickets are only valid on the TTC and if you travel outside the downtown area, you may need to pay for travel on other transportation services.
CYCLE
Toronto is a great city to get around by bike.
Many of our downtown streets have ample bike lanes which makes cycling safe. With 630 Bike Share stations spanning 200 km of Toronto, use the map to find the closest station to you.
Select your pass type and unlock a bike from your smartphone.
HAIL A TAXI, UBER OR LYFT
There are a number of different taxi companies in Toronto. Ride-sharing services Uber and Lyft are available in the city too.
driving around town
Toronto’s streets follow a basic grid pattern and are easy to navigate. Speed limit signs are posted on each street but when they’re not, it’s safe to assume 40km/hour.
Note that the city’s weekday “rush hour” is more than an hour-long—count on heavy traffic from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and again from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Also, many downtown streets have bike lanes and it’s an infraction to stop or park in them.
CAR RENTAL
The following car rental services are available at Pearson Airport:
Avis, Budget, Thrifty, Enterprise, Hertz, and National are all on-site in Terminal 1 for quick, efficient car rentals. For best rates and availability, find and book your car in advance.
CAR SHARE
In addition to car rental services, there are car share applications which allow you to rent out vehicles for shorter periods of time. The most popular car share applications include Turo, Getaround, Zipcar, and Communauto and are available on the App Store and Google Play Store.
parking
Parking on most downtown streets is limited to specific times of day and often requires you to purchase and display a ticket from one of the parking machines located along the street. Be sure to check and obey the signs posted along the street to make sure your vehicle doesn’t get ticketed or, worse, towed away. There are also a variety of public parking lots throughout the city. City-owned lots are indicated by the ‘Green P’ logo—a large ‘P’ in a green circle. Visit Green P for more information.
