Commitment:

NXNE acknowledges the many historical injustices committed in Canada, the music industry, and within the organization’s structure and history against Black, Indigenous, 2SLGBTQ+, and other under-represented communities. NXNE is actively committed to work and correct systemic racism, prejudice, and oppression in the industry and to move towards equity.

We recognize NXNE’s head office is on the traditional lands of Treaty 13 Territory of many nations including the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishnabeg, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee, and the Wendat peoples, and is now home to many diverse First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples. NXNE also acknowledges that Toronto is covered by Treaty 13 signed with the Mississaugas of the Credit, and the Williams Treaties signed with multiple Mississaugas and Chippewa bands.

NXNE is in allyship with Black Lives Matter and other social justice movements that stand for systemic change against violence towards Black, Indigenous, racialized, and systematically under-represented groups in Canada and around the world.

NXNE also recognizes that women and the 2SLGBTQ+ community face ongoing stigma, barriers, and discrimination in Canada and in the music industry. We wholly support any continued work and efforts to address these inequities.

NXNE commits to understand and address systemic barriers of all forms for employees, artists, speakers, supplies, and audience members. We continue to dedicate ourselves to these actions everyday, and to recognize that our efforts cannot stop here and there is more work to be done. We are resolute in ongoing learning on inclusive practices and languages, willingness to change, and accountability. We are open to any suggestions and recommendations that will help improve and change our operations for the better. We also acknowledge that we, as individuals, have the responsibility to seek out our own learning opportunities for the communities that we support and represent.

Code of Conduct:

North by Northeast has a zero-tolerance policy for discrimination. Any incidents of discrimination will be addressed immediately and individuals carrying out these acts will be given a verbal warning or asked to leave the premises. Second chances will be discussed and determined on a case-by-case basis by festival organizers.
