BOYFRN
SATURDAY, JUNE 14 @ INFINITY ROOM (11PM)
Immigrating from Barbados to Toronto’s Scarborough area, BOYFRN gained the full experience of an immigrant-child growing up in a city known for its arts, culture and multiculturalism. Labelled “at-risk” by the age of 14, BOYFRN was taken out of class and given a selection of books to read - one of those books was Tupac Shakur’s poetry collection, The Rose That Grew From Concrete. It was this book that would ignite an already active flame concerning BOYFRN’s capacity for creative writing.
For BOYFRN, someone naturally quite quiet and shy, writing poetry became a type of therapy, giving him an outlet to express and emote. Later on in life, he would make the transition from poetry to music, finding his way into makeshift studios following run-ins with local producers who would acknowledge his talent, skill and hunger to improve.
With the help of some formative producer friends, BOYFRN was able to hone his skills and create his own sound, mixing dark poetic rap with the influence of 90s pop music. BOYFRN released his first single “Nine Tails” in the Fall of 2018, following shortly after with additional singles, “CRY” and “Come down”. With the release of his singles “Last Night” and “Way I Flow”, BOYFRN achieved a certain level of success that garnered him the attention of major platforms like Complex and CBC as one of Canada’s next rising talents in the music industry.
